The Isle of Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, and is easily accessible by car ferries running from Oban, Lochaline and Kilchoan (see Travel). The world-famous island of Iona is situated just off Mull (but 50 miles from Calgary!), whilst Staffa (with Fingal’s Cave) and the Treshnish Isles (the home of numerous seabirds and seals) are a boat-trip away. Mull boasts a single ‘Munro’ (Ben More is 3169 feet high), but there are mountain, hill and coastal walks aplenty, and a dazzling array of wildlife, including whales and dolphins, golden and sea eagles, sea otters and sea birds of all kinds. At the head of Calgary Bay, which is situated on the rugged north-west coast of Mull, is a beautiful white sandy beach about half a mile long - and Bulldog Cottage is right on it! Tobermory is the main town, and is 13 miles from Calgary; everyday supplies (but not petrol) can be obtained from Dervaig, 5 miles away. Be aware that the island’s roads are mainly single-track – but this is part of Mull’s appeal. Like so many before you, you will want to come back, again and again!
